(before) (after)
When I was about 5 years old, "same age as Hồng Cẩm in project Urgent Care”, I remember my left eye was swelling so much that it effected the nerve system in my body that almost caused irreversible blindness in my left eye. “Almost”. I remember my Dad tried everything from Chineses medications to the most modern technology available in hospitals that we could afford to get my eye treated.
I grew up in a very poor family where rice farming was our main source of income each year. Because we had a large family, it was very hard for us to make ends meet growing rice alone. Besides rice, we also planted what else such as vegetables, bananas, coconuts and raised chicken, ducks, pigs, cows as you see here in USA farming zones.
After my eye got treated for a year, I started to see the sun light - some colors but everything else was still like a cloud in front of me. More treatment was required but we were totally broke. My Dad is a brave man. After he sold everything in the house and animals and reserved rice for our family, he went to dig a small can out of the ground by the water fountain in the backyard and started counting the coins in it. It was my Grand Mother's piggy bank and she had been saving for years and passed it along to my Dad. And fortunately I was the one who used the “golden” money to treat my eye. If we did not have what was saved by Grand Mother, I would be blind today still.
Treating something as Hồng Cẩm’s eye must be done in a timely maner. If she missed her window of opportunity, she would never be able to see again. I am so glad that Kinh 5 Foundation was able to provide her with the resources needed at the right time, and I am so happy to see her smiling with eye glasses on her face, and she is able to see the colors of her own clothes.
